Wednesday, January 15, 2025 – Coinciding with a 25 year anniversary publishing board games from Barcelona, Devir, a leading multinational publishing group, announces its acquisition of the Spanish publisher Maldito Games.

With this strategic acquisition, Devir reinforces its promise to expand and diversify the Spanish language board game sector, seeking to maintain continuity and boost the sales of the Maldito Games brand, which contains over 300 titles and specializes in advanced and expert level games.

Through this unification, the Devir group grows to over 600 active titles in its catalog, the largest number of Spanish language games in the market, making it the industry leader in Spain and Latin America both in quantity and quality.

Devir will maintain the Maldito Games brand, enriching its portfolio with acclaimed successes such as Terraforming Mars, Brass Birmingham, Tainted Grail and Anachrony, as well as accessible hits such as Wingspan, Cubirds and Dice Hospital. These titles are not only widely recognized for their quality and production but are also favorites among board game enthusiasts.

Maldito Games’ integration into Devir will allow it to expand its horizons especially in the Latin American market, representing a key growth opportunity.

“Adding Maldito Games to the group reinforces our movement into the expert-level games territory. More than 300 titles unlocks the potential to impact points of sale, fans and consumers,” noted Quim Dorca, CMO of Devir.

“The agreement with a model company like Devir represents an excellent opportunity for our brand and guarantees a new phase in which hits like Wingspan and Everdell will have a bigger impact and reach more players around the world,” adds Francisco Álamo, CEO of Maldito Games.

From its newly opened offices in Barcelona, Devir has decided to continue with both brands, Devir and Maldito Games, to allow each to grow and develop its own identity. This strategy reflects the desire to diversify its offerings and feed different segments of the market.

With this integration, not only does Devir fortify its position in the market, it also reaffirms its commitment to innovation and sustained growth in the board game industry.

Devir celebrates 25 years in Barcelona publishing board games for the whole world

From Barcelona, the company announced that this year it will reach 25 years publishing board games and has scheduled different events and activities throughout 2025 to share the celebration with business partners and fans of the hobby.

The company embarked on its publishing adventure with a small team in 2000 and is now a reference point in publishing and distribution, containing the largest active catalog of Iberian language games (Catalan, Spanish, Portuguese), as well as select titles in English and Italian. Its publishing operation will continue to release 60 games per year with a team of more than 250 people spread over 14 companies.

The group doubled in revenue between 2018 and 2023, and this year looks to grow another 20%. Key elements of the plan include consolidating and expanding international growth, strengthening positions in Latin American markets as the reference point of the board game industry.

“After 25 years we’ve arrived as a reference point for designers and players in Spain and Latin America. From Barcelona, we’re betting on a model that will contribute to the development of a potent entertainment culture. To continue dynamizing this culture we need to keep betting on the most creative design and artistic talents and remain clear in why we do what we do. Through this we will add fans and make board games the best entertainment offering:  smart, fun and healthy,” explains Quim Dorca, CMO of Devir.
