Master the power of steam in Daitoshi
We've finally perfected the power of steam and we can now use it to our advantage! We live in an era of unprecedented progress and new steam-powered inventions are developing faster than ever. Cities are growing, commerce is flourishing, and we are developing our most ambitious machine yet, a giant contraption that will bring even more progress to the city. Yes, some trees are being cut down and the river isn't flowing as much as it used to, but there is still an abundance of vegetation and water, and we can use the extra space to expand our city. Who cares about those old legends about ancestral spirits these days?
Designed by Dani García (author of games such as Barcelona or Arborea) and illustrated by Marina Vidal (internationally recognized for bringing Terry Pratchett's book covers to life in their Catalan edition), Daitoshi is designed for experienced players and can be enjoyed alone or in groups of up to 4 people, from 14 years old, in games lasting about 2 hours. Players will compete to score the maximum number of victory points over a series of rounds.
Daitoshi is part of the Kemushi Saga, a thematic universe that encompasses several board games such as Bitoku, Bamboo, Sand, Yokai Sketch or Silk. With evocative art, inspired by references such as Studio Ghibli films, the different games are like pieces of a large puzzle that, once assembled, tells a great story. In this case, Daitoshi places us at a point where humanity is in full industrial development and is expanding through the ancestral forest of Bitoku. After what happened in this title, the Sand arc will take place.

The components
David Esbrí, Devir's own game editor, says that his intention is always to offer the highest quality in the games he produces, as if it were the deluxe pledge of a patronage campaign. Daitoshi is a good example of this, as it has double-layer personal boards, methacrylate pieces, personalized pawns with different shapes and sizes, circular city tiles and a large wooden megamachine that will go around the board.
The central board of the game shows us the forest that we knew in Bitoku, many years later. Humans have built a large circular city in the center, with five districts and room to expand around it. At the top we find the 4 paths for pilgrims: each one belongs to a different spirit: the forest, the mountain, the underground and the river. And at the bottom of the board there are the patents for inventions that are on the market, the university where you can contribute to the construction of the megamachine and the cities with which we can trade if we take the corresponding action.
Another of Daitoshi's central elements are the personal boards, which represent each player's factory. On the left side the nature tiles accumulate, there is space for workers, steam is produced thanks to water and coal and resources are counted (energy, food, construction materials and luxury goods). On the right side there are the three factory buildings, with spaces for the different inventions on each floor. Illustrated in detail, the boards have 4 moving pieces, which will flip over during the game if we provoke the wrath of the Yôkai.

The game
A Daitoshi game is played continuously: players take their turn, one after the other, but without rounds or phases. On their turn, they can choose whether to produce goods in their factory (and thus gain resources) or move their tycoon to a new city district to perform an action.
In a production turn, players must use steam to activate one or more buildings in their factory. Depending on the level of progress of the inventions, more or fewer resources can be earned. And, in addition, the rest of the players will be able to join the production, activating their own buildings in their factory, paying the corresponding steam cost.
City turns, on the other hand, allow you to carry out Daitoshi's main actions, which are spread across the districts in the center of the board. This will allow players to hire new workers, expand the city, electrify a district, trade with distant cities, or obtain new patents to upgrade their factory to produce more resources in later turns. These actions, however, will always have an impact on the environment, damaging the subsoil, the mountains, the forest or the river.

Actions are not only the best way to gain recognition (or in other words, add victory points to win), but they will help all the inhabitants of the big city. It is even possible to contribute to building a gigantic project, the megamachine. Maybe some forests will be cut down and some rivers will dry up, but in your generosity you will help the displaced workers of those areas by giving them new jobs in your service.
Old legends suggest that forests and rivers are guarded by Yôkai, but progress cannot be stopped due to some old fairy tales. However, just in case, it would be wise to participate in some reforestation projects and hide your involvement in the abuse of natural resources. Every time a player takes a city turn, he will provoke the wrath of the Yôkai and will obtain a tile that he must place on his personal board. When a player accumulates two tiles of the same type, he receives a penalty that affects the operation of the factory: he will produce less steam, he will store fewer workers, it will be more expensive to activate the factories, and it will be less profitable to produce or add to the production of another player.
Daitoshi also includes a solo game mode, in which the player will face the mayor of the city. The same rules apply as in a two-player game, but the mayor has his own deck of cards that serves to guide his actions. The level of difficulty of solitaire mode can be regulated through the advisor cards: the more you draw, the more challenging the experience will be.
