Plan the best neighborhood Cities
Cities are a reflection of their history. Over the centuries, geography and politics have shaped urban design around the world. In modern cities, urban planning is key to guarantee the quality of life of citizens. And now it's your turn to make the best design. The City Council has commissioned you to create an urban plan to renew an entire neighborhood in the city. You will have the opportunity to build new homes and office blocks, parks and leisure areas next to the seafront.
Cities is the latest first-party game published by Devir. The authors of Cities are Phil Walker-Harding and Steve Finn, two true legends of modern board game design. Phil Walker-Harding is the mastermind behind designs such as the legendary Sushi Go!, Imhotep, Dungeon Riders or Cacao. And Steve Finn is the author of Biblos, Herbaceous and Cosmic Run, among many other titles. In the brushes, the work of Jorge Tabanera stands out, responsible for the art of games like Barrio or Conservas, and who stands out for his thoroughness in the details and precision in the shapes.
It allows games for groups of 2 to 4 players, ages 10 and up, with a duration of about 40 minutes. With worker placement and pattern building mechanics, the game will give us the opportunity to visit the cities of Sydney, Venice, New York, Barcelona, Rio de Janeiro, Lisbon, Mexico City and Buenos Aires. Will you be able to design the most dazzling neighborhood?
The components
Inside the box you will find a large game board, 4 double-sided printed city achievement boards, 36 city tiles, 48 attribute tiles, 32 scoring cards, 100 building pieces, a cloth bag and more of 30 pawns and pieces. Not bad, right?
The board is the central element of Cities. This is where all players will go to use their worker pawns and grab scoring cards, building pieces, and city and attribute tiles. Decorated with great detail by Jorge Tabarnera's brushes, it has a space at the top that simulates a workspace, where the city achievements board is placed. There are a total of 4 different achievement boards, printed double-sided, showing 8 different cities. Each city has different achievements to compete for, so variability between games is guaranteed.
Another of the most characteristic elements of Cities are its pawns, achievement rings and construction pieces. Designed with bright, tactile colors, the components help create an immersive and enjoyable gaming experience. As the game progresses, players will fill their city tiles with construction pieces, which will be stacked to form structures of varying heights. Lastly, the scoring cards have a design inspired by smartphones, inviting us to get the perfect snapshot of our city neighborhood to score the greatest bonus points possible.
The game
The Cities rulebook is only 4 pages long, so learning how to play takes no more than 10 minutes. It is an ideal game for those who want to play as soon as possible! The game takes place over 8 rounds (or 4 rounds in 2-player games). Each round, players use workers to obtain: a score card, a city tile, one or two attribute tiles, or two to four construction tiles.
City tiles can have three types of spaces: park, water and construction. Building pieces are placed on building squares of the corresponding color to form buildings, which can be 1 to 4 stories high. Scoring cards and city achievement boards provide players with objectives to complete, to score points at the end of the game. Whoever scores the most points at the last round will have built the best neighborhood and will win the game!
Throughout the game, players will take city tiles to form a neighborhood in their play area. They are placed adjacent to each other, although a player's neighborhood can never exceed 3 tiles long and 3 tiles wide. On the spaces that show the tiles, players can place attribute tiles and construction pieces according to the specific type they have. Players will have special attribute tiles at their disposal, which function as a wild card.
In each turn, players will have to make important decisions based on the elements they have available on the board and their strategy, but they will also have to think about their rivals' moves, blocking actions with their workers or stealing cards, pieces or tiles that they have. Each bad decision could give the opponent many points.
If at the end of their turn a player meets the requirements for one of the achievements on the city board, they can claim the highest reward available with the ring of their color. There are many ways to earn points in Cities!
